Whether you’re an artist or just appreciate good art\, you’ll enjoy learning from this iconographical tour of art history. \nLocation: Upstairs\, St. Gregory Room\nSign up here. \nDr. Matthew Milliner is professor of Art History at Wheaton College. He teaches across the range of art history with an eye for the prospects and pitfalls of visual theology. He holds an M.A. & Ph.D. in art history from Princeton University\, and an M.Div from Princeton Theological Seminary. His scholarly specialization is Byzantine and medieval art\, with a focus on how such images inform contemporary visual culture. Dr. Milliner is a six-time appointee to the Curatorial Advisory Board of the United States Senate\, and has written for publications ranging from The New York Times to First Things. He was awarded a Commonwealth fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia\, and is author most recently of The Everlasting People: G.K. Chesterton and the First Nations and Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon.

DESCRIPTION:We are now accepting submissions of original poetry or artwork for the upcoming RezArts Gallery Water Theme Exhibit. Online submission deadline: Sunday\, July 13.  \nWater\, like fire\, can bring both life and death. We drink water\, bathe in water\, and nurture gardens with water. We need water to live\, but we cannot live in water. Submerged\, we drown. Floods wreck homes and crops. Thousands die in shipwrecks each year. \nThe writers of holy scripture engage with water as more than a straightforward material reality. Water is a symbol of life: a life-giving river flows from the new temple (Ezekiel)\, from those who believe in Jesus (John 7)\, and from the throne of the Lamb (Revelation 22:1-2). \nWater is also a symbol of chaos and death: the earth before creation was chaotic waters (Genesis 1:2); in the flood\, these chaotic waters again covered the earth and brought death (Genesis 6); at the Red Sea\, the waters destroyed the Egyptian army (Exodus). \nWe invite you to engage artistically with water in creation\, scripture\, and church tradition. Enter the tension of contradictory symbols. Sit in awe of the ocean and the God who sets boundaries on that ocean. Rejoice in life-giving streams. DESCRIPTION:Come to our new discipleship ministry\, Rooted in Scripture. Psalm 1 tells us that those who meditate on God’s word are like trees planted by streams of water\, rooted and strong\, and always bearing fruit. Knowing and loving the Bible is essential to knowing and loving God. Rooted provides space to linger over\, dig in\, and study the Scriptures in a way we can’t do in our main worship service. \nRooted is for all levels of Bible readers. If you don’t know the Bible very well\, Rooted is for you! If you know and love the Bible\, but want deeper insights from gifted teachers\, Rooted is for you. If you can’t find time for in-depth Bible study\, and want to study Scriptures together\, join us every Sunday from 9:15-10:15 in the upstairs hospitality area. \nThis year\, our team of gifted teachers\, Drs Andy Abernethy\, Kevin Emmert\, and John Clark will begin working through the Gospel of John from beginning to end. There’s no signup required\, just come!
