SUMMARY:Created in the Image of God: Dorothy L. Sayers
DESCRIPTION:Protestants interested in the relationship between Christianity and the arts are re-discovering the aesthetic theology of Dorothy L. Sayers\, whom C.S. Lewis described as one of the most important influences on his spiritual growth. Like Lewis\, Sayers was born into a Christian family but did not become earnest about faith until much later in life\, and her transformation came through the arts—leading her to generate one of the biggest religious controversies in twentieth-century England. This talk will cover Sayers’ life story\, explaining why theologians and Christian cultural critics continue to endorse her “Christian aesthetic.” \nCome hear Dr. Crystal Downing’s presentation\, “Created in the Image of God: Dorothy L. Sayers.” An award-winning author and former director of the Wade Center\, Dr. Downing will speak on Sayers’ view of the relationship between Christianity and the arts. \nJoin us on Sunday\, June 1\, 12:30 – 2:00 pm\, upstairs in the St. Gregory Room. Bring your own lunch.  \nDr. Crystal L. Downing \nWith a PhD in English from the University of California at Santa Barbara\, Crystal L. Downing has become a specialist on Dorothy L. Sayers. Her first book received an international award for outstanding Sayers scholarship\, and her second on Sayers\, Subversive\, was granted what the Chicago Tribune described as “a coveted starred review from Publishers Weekly.” On June 5\, Crystal’s sixth book\, and her third on Sayers\, The Wages of Cinema\, will be released at the Marion E. Wade Center\, where she served as co-director with her husband for six years. \n

SUMMARY:Hearing God Class
DESCRIPTION:How do we hear God’s voice? How can we be sure that what we think we hear is not our own subconscious? What if what God says to us is not clear? \nThis class will utilize the teachings and book by the late Dallas Willard – the wonderful American philosopher\, known for his writings on Christian spiritual formation. Includes weekly book discussion\, listening to Dallas himself via video and practicing how to experience and hear God’s voice with more confidence.\nHe wrote:\n“Hearing God? A daring idea\, some would say—presumptuous and even dangerous. But\nwhat if we are made for it? What if the human system will not function properly without\nit? There are good reasons to think it will not.\nIsn’t it more presumptuous and dangerous\, in fact\, to undertake human existence without\nhearing God?” \nWe’ll gather six times over the summer on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm:\nJune 26\nJuly 10\nJuly 17\nJuly 24\nAug 7\nAug 14 \nSession Content:\n You Were Created for Intimate Friendship with God\n What Hearing God Is Not\n Trinitarian Fellowship\n The Still Small Voice\n Hearing God in the Context of the Kingdom of God\n Hearing God as a Life \n“My sheep hear my voice\, and I know them\, and they follow me” – John 10:27 \nBeing close to God means communicating with him\, and this communication is a two-way street—telling him what is on our hearts in prayer and hearing and understanding what he is saying to us. It is this second half of our conversation with God that is so important but can also be so difficult. How can you be sure God is speaking to you? The key is to focus not so much on individual actions and decisions as on building our personal relationship with our Creator.\nHearing God is but one dimension of a richly interactive relationship\, and obtaining guidance is but one facet of hearing God. This updated classic….provides rich spiritual insight into how we can hear God’s voice clearly and develop an intimate partnership with him in the work of his kingdom. The reader will learn\nthat divine guidance goes beyond the anxious\, sometimes neurotic\, quest for “what God wants me to do\,” to having a critical role in my becoming a responsible co-laborer with Him\, the kind of person He expects me to be. God is inviting us to reorganize our lives in a way that keeps us walking so closely with him that it becomes easy to know his mind and hear his voice. \nSign up here.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Local Landscape: Gallery Reception & Artist Talk with Joel Sheesley
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, June 27\, 6:30-8:30pm\, in RezCafe for a gallery reception and an opportunity to learn from renowned local artist and painter Joel Sheesley. Enjoy live music by harpist Hannah Muzzy and light refreshments. Invite your friends! \nJoel will speak about what he has learned as he has painted landscapes in DuPage County and the surrounding area. In this illustrated talk he will offer a brief history of his artistic journey to the landscape as subject. He will discuss his painting methods\, his conceptual understanding of landscape painting\, and his sense of the value and meaning landscape painting offers to viewers. \nJoel Sheesley is a painter whose fifty-year artistic path has embraced a variety of genres. About ten years ago he turned toward landscape painting and has been captivated by it ever since. Sheesley is professor emeritus at Wheaton College where he taught painting for 42 years. He has exhibited his work locally and nationally in galleries and museums. He recently completed artistic residencies with The Conservation Foundation\, the Edith Farnsworth House\, The Forest Preserve District of DuPage\, and the Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Joel Sheesley’s studio and home are in Wheaton where he lives with his wife Joan.       \nArtist Statement:\nInherent in the idea of “landscape” is that land\, an unbounded phenomenon\, can be delimited. It can be sampled in discreet segments and pictured. That picturing can take many forms (I know a biologist who is a “landscape ecologist”). I’m working within the tradition of landscape painting because the picture of land that painting produces presupposes a sympathetic relationship between land and people\, between a body of land and the hand of the artist. From time to time that sympathy has followed misguided paths\, but the truth that people and land are interconnected remains. Whether we are aware of it or not\, we all live in relation to a landscape. If in our present circumstances we begin to lose track of that relationship\, painted landscapes may play a part in its restoration. \nCome for the Gallery Reception\, 6:30-8:30pm\, on Friday\, June 27. The Artist Talk will be held at 7:15pm.\nEnjoy live music by harpist Hannah Muzzy from 6:30-7:15pm.\nInvite your friends! \nThe exhibit will remain on display from June 8 to July 31 in RezCafe.

SUMMARY:Good Friday Gift Trips - Info Lunch
DESCRIPTION:As part of our annual Good Friday Gift in 2025\, Resurrection was invited to support our global partners by funding strategic short-term trips to the Middle East. Rez congregants 18+ are encouraged to apply. We are especially looking for tech professionals\, artists\, and mental health therapists. If that doesn’t fit you\, we’d still love to receive your application if you have other interests and skills. Four to six people will go on each trip. \n\nWhen: September 7\,  12-2pm\nWhere: Gregory Room\nLunch is provided if you sign up here by Sept 3. If you did not sign up for lunch\, you are still very welcome to attend\, but please bring your own lunch.
