“Candles in the Night” is a sonnet in the English rhyme scheme, written upon reflecting on Romans 12:12 in worship at Rez, with friends who also planned to contribute to the arts festival, and on my own in quiet moments. I decided to write a sonnet early on in the creative process, relishing the rules of iambic pentameter rhyme scheme and the freedom within those rules I had for creativity. As I reflected, the idea of waiting and hope as a light that could not go out, sustained by prayer, emerged again and again as a theme that tied the three parts of the verse together. Despite periodic writers’ block, particularly between quatrains, I truly enjoyed writing of this poem and looking for–and finding–the light that somehow tied it all together.
