Advent Hope: The Annunciation

Each week of Advent a new visual artist and poet will be featured in our RezArts Gallery. These original pieces invite you into the anticipation of Christ’s coming through a representation of each week’s theme: hope, peace, love, and joy. This series will culminate in a fifth display celebrating Christmas. Visit the Advent Exhibit in RezCafe, on display until January 12.

We invite you into the theme of hope this week with The Annunciation, a watercolor painting by Anna Freeman. She describes her creative process:

I began conceptualizing my painting by reflecting on the theme of Hope. I realized that the most vivid experience of hope often comes after a long period of darkness, when despair has extinguished the belief that things can change. That message of  hope thrills the soul like no other, bringing life to a weary heart. This echoes the joy of creation at the Archangel’s annunciation to Mary that she would bear the hope of mankind.

Inspired by golden autumn leaves against an October-blue sky, I created this abstracted depiction of the Annunciation. The flaming yellow tree symbolizes the angel’s wings, the open expanse of blue sky reflects Mary and her simple openness to God’s plan, and the lilies represent her purity and the hope of the Incarnation and Resurrection.

Anna Freeman originally hails from the Pacific Northwest and studied Art at Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI. She adores dreary days and loves to study light in art.
