Dear Resurrection Family,
Today the Ecclesiastical Court for the Trial of a Bishop published its decision regarding allegations against Bishop Stewart’s leadership. The ruling was conclusive: “the Court unanimously finds the Respondent NOT GUILTY on every count set forth in the Presentments” (p.70). I encourage you to read the Court Order and the Province’s announcement.
We are grateful for the Court’s dedication to thoroughly examine all the evidence. And I am thankful for Bishop Stewart’s commitment to see this lengthy canonical process to the end. We are pleased to note the Court’s conclusion that Bishop Stewart “demonstrated a pattern of leadership marked by a shepherd’s heart–one that seeks restoration, bears responsibility for unintended harm, and prioritizes care for those in pain over the protection of reputation or position” (pp.5-6).
We also recognize “the profound suffering experienced by victims of abuse” (p.70) and, as a church family, we will continue to be vigilant to care for the most vulnerable among us. During this Advent season, may the Lord bring his comfort and healing to all who are suffering.
On Sunday, January 18, from 3-5 pm, we plan to gather and process this together. As best as we are able, we hope to unpack the Court’s decision and respond to your questions.
Warmly,

Fr. Matt Woodley
Interim Dean
*An Ecclesiastical Trial is not a legal trial, but an opportunity to explore accusations raised against any ordained person. We are grateful that our Province’s Canons provide a means to hold all church leaders accountable. Bishop Stewart has not committed nor been accused of any crimes, nor is he accused of civil liability. Read more background on the trial in the diocesan FAQs.
