Deus ex Chaos

By Michael Skura

It is a challenge to convey the source of beauty, Yahweh, bringing order over Chaos. (“Deus ex Chaos” means God brings order.) When I imagine tribulation and despair, I see Creation being undone. Using abstract non-figurative marks represents this devolution. But order emerges, in face of a man. Like the Holy Ghost, hovering over Chaos in the opening sentences in Sacred Scripture order comes together.  Using tempera and oil pastels, the random colors, and shapes represent creation out of order. But partnering with the Triune God order, proportion, symmetry can emerge and creation is made new. The act of painting and rendering is like an unceasing prayer of rejoicing with hope welling up and being patient that all things will be made right in the end.
