God’s WIP (work in progress)

By Susan Wetherington

My art seeks to reflect God’s work in our lives. The background sweater becomes the canvas for this fiber art piece depicting our connection to Christ within Romans 12:12 . The center cable represents Christ, the vine, and the I-cords that move on top of the cable are branches with “deep” roots extending below the ribbed edging. Because we are involved with God, the sleeves represent our part with hope and prayer. The lavender (purity, silence, devotion) and the hymn “Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart” are held in the arm of hope. The arm of “pray”is close to the “wound” or affliction, which is in the process of being sewn up. As we wait in patience for the closing of the wound, God’s heart of grace is revealed. The flowers and leaves are the living fruit of Romans 12:9-14. Notice the branches are fruitful, even in affliction. Created using wool yarn and paper, the design elements are knit or crocheted for a 3-D effect. Under the sweater, the canvas is covered by my hometown newspaper and my granddaughter’s art, reflecting the history in which God places us. A garment care label with instructions is attached.
