Dear Resurrection Family,
We continue to await the result of Bishop Stewart’s Ecclesiastical Trial* that concluded in October, as I shared in my last letter. The Court’s decision will be released online on or before Tuesday, December 16. Following the release of the Court’s decision, a 30-day window for appeal is open to either party upon sufficient grounds. Any sentencing is then provided by the College of Bishops (not the Court), shortly after the appeal window closes.
After I learn of publication of the Court’s final order, I will email you a link.
We are reaching the final stage of a 4.5 year journey during which we have sought to honor the canonical process alongside Bishop Stewart. This has meant that neither he nor our church leaders have spoken publicly into the accusations against his leadership. Many of you have been waiting a long time for answers to your questions. We appreciate you walking with us in this season.
What lies ahead for us at Resurrection? We anticipate that the Court’s final order may be detailed and lengthy, and it will take our leaders time to read and process. In the new year, we plan to offer an in-person opportunity to unpack the Court’s decision together and provide space for conversation.
We also recognize how difficult this time of uncertainty has been for all involved. Whatever the Court decides, the past months and years have been challenging. I am grateful for your patience and willingness to wait on the Lord. Please keep praying for everyone involved in this process, and for a thorough and clear result.
Let us continue to keep our eyes fixed above, actively watching and waiting for Emmanuel, God with us.
Warmly,

Fr. Matt Woodley
Interim Dean
*An Ecclesiastical Trial is not a legal trial, but an opportunity to explore accusations raised against any ordained person. We are grateful that our Province’s Canons provide a means to hold all church leaders accountable. Bishop Stewart has not committed nor been accused of any crimes, nor is he accused of civil liability. Read more background on the trial in the diocesan FAQs.
