Deacon Val McIntyre

Recently I spent a whole day reflecting on this question: “Through the course of my life, when have I made concrete decisions to say “yes” to God?” I thought immediately of Jesus’ words, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 10:9

My parents were good and loving people, but not at all religious. When I was fourteen, someone gave my mother a copy of the Living Bible which I commenced reading with great earnestness starting on page one. When I was somewhere in Leviticus, I awakened from a dream and felt a loving Presence in my room that I suspected might be God. What little I understood about Jesus, the forgiveness of sins, and the promise of new life all came together in a moment in time. I surrendered and accepted the Love that I encountered in that moment. That first “yes” to God changed the entire course of my life. In walking through that door, which was Jesus himself, I found myself in a broad open pasture under the great blue sky of God’s goodness and love.

The next big “yes” happened when I left my home in Colorado to attend college in Illinois. I was both a first-generation college student and a first-generation Christian. From there other life-defining doors were opened. In 1989 I married Mark McIntyre and we began investing our lives in Church of the Resurrection.

In 2011, I joined the church staff and was ordained to the deaconate in 2014. My passion is to bring the healing power of the Gospel to the deepest hurts of the human heart and to teach leaders how to sustain fruitful ministry through spiritual disciplines grounded in the Ignatian tradition.
