Dry Places

By Laura Wruck

I am a notoriously poor gardener, and have a little graveyard of dead potted plants outside my back door. However, one day my husband noticed a small, green shoot sprouting up in the same pot as the brown husk of a fern that had been dead and unwatered for months. I dug it out, and found that the new sprout was nestled right in among the old, dried-out roots.
The image was so striking I had to photograph it, and in the process of taking and editing the photo I have been reflecting on the goodness of our Lord, who is always bringing forth new life even in places and situations that seem utterly dry of hope. The seed of this small sprout sat patiently under the unwatered soil for months, waiting to be called into life. This reminder of God’s goodness and constancy in all situations has been an encouragement to me to continue growing in joy, patience, and faithfulness.
